Send Mohammad to College

Kelly James Clark is organizing this fundraiser, through the Palestine Partners, for Mohammad Hureini’s university expenses. Kelly is mentoring Mohammad through the We Are Family Foundation’s Three Dot Dash program for mentoring global teen leaders.

Mohammad Hureini, age 18, hopes to attend university in Ramallah but because he has been a full-time, unpaid peace activist (living in his home village with no access to part-time jobs) he is unable to raise the funds for college on his own.  As such, we are asking friends of peace and justice to support Mohammad’s dream of a college education.  We aim to raise $10,000 for Mohammad’s first and second semesters.

Mohammad is a Palestinian human rights defender and peace activist working with Youth of Sumud. Youth of Sumud - the youth of steadfast perseverance - is committed to peaceful resistance of the occupation, and to supporting farmers and families in their struggles to live and work on their land. They are based in Masafer Yatta, in the southern end of the West Bank.  Youth of Sumud face aggression with nonviolent action, defending themselves from rifles with their video cameras; they oppose desolation and death with hope and life.

At 13-years-old, Mohammad bravely volunteered to help rebuild a shelter in Sarura, an evicted village in the South Hebron Hills impacted by ongoing violence and social unrest. Mohammad saw that the people in Sarura lived in constant fear. In August 2017, he helped form Youth of Sumud – a community of young Palestinians in the South Hebron Hills committed to peaceful popular resistance as a strategic choice to end Israeli occupation. They work on the ground to protect people, land and resources, defending the human rights of Palestinian communities.

Youth of Sumud accompanies children to school and shepherds to their lands; it helps farmers harvest and protect their crops, coordinates advocacy campaigns to promote peace, and documents the violence to raise awareness. Youth of Sumud began as a local initiative and its volunteers have since traveled to communities across the West Bank to help people who face violence daily. They have impacted thousands of people with their work, from assisting Palestinians to travel safely, rebuild their homes and carry on their livelihood, to organizing youth discussions about community needs and solutions, and spreading awareness via social media and campaigns. Mohammad hopes to be part of ending the conflict that causes so much injustice in his country. He believes every young person has the right to feel safe and live in a just world.
